Is there any other kiters out there that are sick of hearing about stand up paddle boarding (I hate the abbreviation so I will not be using it here)? I'm not sure I get what the big deal is.
About 16 pages were devoted to this sport in the recent "KITEBOARDER" mag. Does anyone else find is odd to look through a kiteboarding magazine and see 16 pages of paddle boarding? |

Argh,
If you don't like the abridged, S.tandU.pP.addleboard.
We started calling the practitioners, "sweepers". I kind of like the term "moppers".
As far as a 16 page article on "moppping" in a kite mag. I did not see it. Let me guess, is it a big advertiser? Do you think it was 16 page ad. from a brand?
Semi-flat, "tweener" day, between surfing and kiting, not really good for either. I tried it and had a blast. Better than sitting in the car-park moaning and bitching, when you can be mopping and sweeping.
Would you beleive going fishing and "mopping"? Troll for lunch, just as long you are not dinner.
Now if only, I could get the cost knocked down.................I saw these doors at Home Depot.........a trim here.................
Sweep responsibly, no leash, you will kill something.

Thanks Nutshack, for posting!
I was horrified of the the arrogance and ignorance behavior, these two had at the Wedge. I would love to see a few interviews from the other "water users" that day. I guarantee it was not rainbows and sunshine spoken!
Those boards will kill on impact and or drown animals and humans. Those two, publicity hounds, had zero business at the Wedge. There is a new reason to keep an ambulance in the parking lot.
If you a friend, or a family member get hit by that projectile, is a "sorry bro/brah, my bad" going to close the event? Not a chance.
What were the Life guards, guarding? Whose lives?
Sweep at a desolate beach, How do you think Malibu Surfrider Beach got closed to SUPers?

Wedge is a circus regardless of who or what is out there.....
I still wouldn't want to get nailed with one of those though.... |

I too am quite annoyed buy these brutes...No, seriously, they sold us kiteboarding as a light-duty way to get out there and enjoy some time on the water (stealth - no roof racks, no big board, no mast, etc.). It all fits in a back pack! Fine. I bought in. Havn't touched my windsurf gear in a couple years. But, alas we've been betrayed! Now they're trying to sell us these boards that are the size of a frickin sunfish sailboat! Boy, if that doesn't send a signal to the rest of the office that you're probably not gonna see the 5 PM bell (or the 4 or 3 PM bells for that matter) when they see a SUP on your SUV, then I don't know what does.
That said, I'd give the stand up thing a try; could make me even more ripped than I am now (who-AH)! |

| Do what I did with one of your larger old windsurfers sitting around doing nothing. Take it out on a light wind day and see what it's all about. Granted they wont be the best boards for the job but they will work OK. |

Yep! SUP isn't even a new idea..it's an old idea regurgitated from the early days.
While participants don't bother me I just don't get it. I'd rather go running or swim. I'd be embarrassed to be seen on one...like a fat chick or a moped they might be fun to ride but ...
I am quite baffled by the new found popularity of the activity but if I were a retailer I'd hop "onboard" and pump the crap out of it.
And what's up with these guys in the above video? Ever heard of a leash? Remember the ocean kayakers in the surf zone? At least most of the kayaks didn't fly around looking for victims when they riders lost them...
Of course you could say the same thing about a kite hitting the sand near kids. |

There are a bunch of guys here doing this, except they use long poles attached to the board which have clear sheets of plastic on them. They go the same speed though (really slow).
(side note: I'm amazed that guys will spend $1000 for a SUP and paddle, but won't drop a single dime on a serious light-wind kite and board.) |

I hope they have 16 pages of xbox reviews in the next magazine, because i'd rather be playing than SUP'ing in no wind, and i own a SUP and a van.
I tried my SUP with an 8m kite on a marginal light wind day (7-10mph) and it was insanely difficult! I could only go straight downwind, any attempt to edge was quickly corrected by hydrodynamics. Anybody have any success with this? That's way more appealing than the paddle. I got into this sport because I'm lazy and I hate paddling!

Nothing is worse than driving to the beach and getting skunked. Surfing is fun if there are waves. SUP is fun with or without waves and I'll take it over running on the beach or driving home through traffic having done nothing at all.
I'm willing to bet that most people hating on it haven't given it a go. It's just another way to enjoy the ocean.
Should you respect other ocean users? For sure. You don't need epic conditions to have fun. Stay away.
I got mine from http://www.pushpaddleboards.com/
Good prices to be had. |
