Newport has some of the cleanest, down-the-line wavesailing on the Oregon Coast when the NW swell hits 8 feet or better. The south arching orientation of the jetty cleans up the usually messy summer swell nicely.

Due to the high dunes, and angle of the beach, it's usually side-off with
N or NW wind. There are two places to launch: The S. Jetty, which can be brutally exposed, but closer to the sailing/surfing wave, and the South Beach state park (day use area), which requires an upwind sail of about two reaches, but has a grassy, windless, and generally much more pleasant
rigging and parking area. There are also bathrooms and a cold water
shower at the park.

The wind at the South Jetty sailing area is usually about 5 knots less than other sites in the area, but generally fills in by about 3 p.m. in the summer. Bring your 5.3 and don't get caught in the shore
break directly in front of the South Beach State Park day use area.

To reach Newport from Portland, get onto I-5 heading south towards Salem. Drive through Salem and start looking for signs regarding mileage to Albany. From I-5, take exit # 234 heading west towards Corvallis on RTE 20 (Pacific Blvd. SE). After approximately 12 miles on RTE 20, you will enter the town of Corvallis. Continue heading westward on RTE 20 for another 45 miles until you reach the town of Newport. At the HWY 101 junction in town, turn left (south) onto HWY 101 and continue over the Yaquina Bay Bridge. Immediately after crossing the bridge, take your 1st left turn onto S Pacific Way which be curve back under HWY 101. Take another left turn onto SW 26th St. which will then turn into SE Jetty Way. Follow Jetty Way out to the end of the South Jetty past Newport Water Sports where you will find the main surf/sailing launch.

Data from this station is courtesy of NOAA's National Data Buoy Center. This sensor is a government installation. Available on the internet as public domain, site information is ported to iwindsurf.com's site. We fully appreciate the high quality, precision sensor array that sits in a position which can't be beat on the South Jetty. It seems to provide a pretty good reading although some reports have been received that it may err slightly on the high side. Also be sure to check that info you are receiving is not old as NWS sites are notoriously bad at staying current!
