Station Lost In Fire. The station was lost in a fire, so we don't expect this location to come back. We are looking for alternative locations to bring this one back but we cannot say when that might happen.

South Padre Island has a long history as a windsurfing location. Year round warm temperatures, average daily wind speeds of 18mph, combined with the smooth and shallow water of the Laguna Madre offer excellent conditions for beginner to advanced windsurfers and kiteboarders. Recently with the growth of Kiteboarding, the island has been pegged the new "kiteboarding Mecca" in North America.

The launch sites on the Laguna Madre are on the North end of the island. The South flats are a public access, within the city limits. Winds can be blocked due to high-rise buildings on the island.

The North Flats are a private beach for windsurfers and kiteboarders only. South Padre Island Windsurfing Association leases the site. For a small annual fee you can join the association and have access to the North Flats. The association has formed guidelines and rules to keep windsurfers and kiteboarders co-existing without conflict. This site offers wide open sand flats and water, (about 2 miles of beach), with absolutely no obstructions.

The mainland side to the west of South Padre Island offers rugged, ranch style launches and some of the best winds in South Texas. Only for advanced riders.
And the Gulf side offers surf and great downwinders.

Many thanks to South Padre Island Kiteboarding, Inc. and the Sea Ranch Restaurant and Bar for providing such an excellent sensor location. South Padre Island Kiteboarding is the islands only exclusive and dedicated, full service school and shop.

The Sea Ranch Restaurant and Bar is one of America's premier dining experiences. No trip to South Padre Island is complete without an evening dining on the water at Sea Ranch. Restaurant and Hospitality Magazine has dubbed the Sea Ranch "One of America's Top 500 Restaurants" for five (5) consecutive years.

The New South Padre Island (SPI) sensor is located south of the Queen Isabella Causeway on the Sea Ranch Fishing Pier that is directly on the Laguna Madre. SPI runs south to north from the SPI jetties (south) to the Port Mansfield Jetties (North) so the location of the sensor provides a clean, true, on the water reading from all directions.

The Gulf of Mexico coast is on the eastside of the island and the Laguna Madre is on the Westside (bayside) of the island. The best direction for winds are south to north, or any combination of west winds, south and north (SE, SW, NE, NW). Summer winds are very steady, from the South and Southeast. The average daily wind speed is 18 mph.

Spring, fall and winter winds vary with frontal activity. Frontal winds are predominantly from the South and North and can be very strong (35mph plus) before and after a front.
