Manzanita Overview
Located just under 2 hours from Portland, this North Coast sailing site is well known as a reliable summer northwest wind spot. Winds here typically range from 18-24 MPH during the summer months of June through September. Launching and returning to the beach is particularly easy here due to the fact that several miles of wide open beach exist with no rock obstructions. The current runs to the south, increasing with larger surf. Sandbars which form during the winter months offer some well shaped spring wave sailing conditions. These bars are worn down and moved around creating more of a chaotic beachbreak scene at lower tides during summer months. Higher tides are best and safest. Manzanita is best known as a great jumping spot on swells running under 8 ft. It is common to see very good consistent wind a bit outside the surf zone, with a large hole extending to the beach (this hole tends to increase later in the day). Stay outside on those days, you'll be happily sailing while the rest are stuck on the beach. Larger swell events are generally difficult to sail here unless winds are particularly strong (the surf blocks the wind, wait for a break between wave sets). Some parking is available on Ocean Road near the Sunset Surf Motel. Winds seem to fill in best along this portion of the beach as the accelerate around the headland to the north. Excellent surfing also exists several miles to the north at Oswald State Park, better known as Short Sands.

Maps & Directions
From Portland, drive west on HWY 26 through Hillsboro and start looking for the HWY 6 junction towards Tillamook. Once on HWY 6, continue approximately another 45 miles into Tillamook. From Tillamook, turn north on HWY 101 and drive another 20 miles around the bay up towards Manzanita. Once in the town of Manzanita, turn left on Laneda Ave. and proceed straight ahead towards the Pacific. Launch area is near the junction of Laneda Ave. and Ocean Rd.

Sensor Notes

This sensor is now located on a private home w/ beachfront exposure. It is located about 1/4 mile south of the previous sensor location but at about the same height relative to the beach and actually closer to the water's edge.

This site location appears to catch both northerly and southerly directions quite cleanly. Readings are fairly representative of what sailors will actually find outside the surf zone out on the water.
