open lake forecast for lake ontario
national weather service buffalo ny
403 pm edt thu apr 23 2026

for waters beyond five nautical miles of shore on lake ontario

waves are the significant wave height - the average of the highest
1/3 of the wave spectrum. occasional wave height is the average of
the highest 1/10 of the wave spectrum.

.synopsis...a strong 30.7 inch high centered well to the north will
remain ridged south across the lake through friday. a 29.6 inch low
over the upper great lakes friday morning will nudge a warm front
toward the lake as it moves into the central great lakes friday
afternoon. this low will slightly weaken to 29.7 inches as it passes
just southwest of lake friday night while nudging the warm front a
bit further east over the lake. the low then slides southeast into
the mid atlantic region saturday forcing the front back to the
southwest of the lake. a 30.2 inch area of high pressure will then
build across the lower great lakes saturday night through monday. a
29.4 inch area of low pressure over the great plains monday night,
will advance northeast into the upper great lakes later monday night
into tuesday morning while pushing an attendant warm front across
the lake. the 29.4 inch low will then continue northeast to james
bay tuesday night sending an attendant cold front across the lake.
