Duxbury Overview
Duxbury is an excellent place to hone high-wind skills. There are no waves, and while the swells can get large enough to make uphauling impossible, that's about as large as they get. Pay attention to the tide since much of the area around the bridge is unsailable at low tide. On the other hand, just either side of low tide, the shallows are outstanding for learning waterstarts: stand up, position the rig, then drop back into the water for the start. The bottom, however, is clam bed muck so you'll want footwear if you plan to stand. If you sail the north side of the Powder Point Bridge, the wind barrels right down the channel. If the wind is out of the west, go somewhere else or be prepared to swim your rig to the windline; Powder Point produces the worst wind shadow we've ever seen. It can be glassy around the Point and cappin' in the Bay. So while the reports during westerlies may be encouraging, getting to those winds can be an ordeal. local sticker required over the bridge-parking is available in small lot before crossing bridge Note to Kite Surfers - please do NOT launch or kite on the bay side (eg west side of beach) anywhere near the Powder Point Bridge...drive out to 'Kite Beach' on the beach road near high pines.
