Gulfport-Biloxi Overview
Gulfport has miles of man-made, white sand beach. The primary sailing spot in Gulfport is on the south side of HWY 90 approximately 1.32 miles East of HWY 49. Sand Beach (its official name on the sign) is approximately 100 yards wide at high tide, with plenty of room for launching and landing of kites. The city of Gulfport is currently in the process of building a boardwalk at this beach, which will be a nice addition for rigging your gear. Because of barrier islands, this spot has only wind generated wave action and only experiences mild chop. The water is warm enough so you don’t need a wet suit even into late November. The water is shallow and only waist to chest high for hundreds of yards out making it an ideal spot for beginners. There are very few beach goers during the summer months and the beach is pretty much void of all pedestrian traffic from September to April.
This spot is best in Southerly wind. S, SW, SE, E and W. Trees north of the spot make for extremely gusty, practically unridable conditions in Northerly winds. In side shore conditions, riders have at least ½ mile of open water and beach in either direction.
There is free, beachside parking immediately parallel to the site for about 10 cars.
