Oceanside Overview
Generally known for it's very high wave quality, Oceanside is rapidly becoming a popular surfsailing spot for Portland and Gorge surfsailors. A demanding breakzone due to a lack of swell protection from the north, the beachbreak here is notorious for destroying gear. Not a place for intermediate wavesailors, the reward for getting outside is a very clean right to left wave excellent for smacking the lip. Sailed on N and NW winds, conditions are generally a little lighter than at Manzanita by approximately 5 mph and winds in the breakzone can be tough to neogotiate. Once again, this spot is best suited for advanced to expert wavesailors on any swell running over 6 ft. A 2nd (less popular due to shifty winds) launch site exists at the state park in town at the end of Maxwell Ave. This sensor also indicates wind strength in Netarts Bay which is more suited to intermediate level sailors working on their jibes. Parking at Oceanside is limited, there are signs posted right near the main launch - make sure to follow the instructions or your car will be towed. Be respectful of nearby local landowners or this prime sailing venue may experience further restrictions in the future. Excellent surfing potential also exists just south of Oceanside at Cape Lookout. A 2 mile trail to the water will lead to some legendary rights at swells running over 8 ft. Cape Kiwanda, several more miles to the south, hosts better surfing conditions on smaller swells.
