Data from this station is courtesy of the National Weather Service (NWS). I just returned from a week's trip to St. Maarten. The sensor is apparently at the airport which is on the west side of the island and consistently under reports the prevailing winds which are from the East. (The good sailing beaches are on the East side of the island.) I kited every day during the first week of January using my 12M kite and small board meaning the wind was 20 or more mph every morning. However, the wind report for this week (from the airport) shows winds in the low teens. Another perspective from a windsurfer in July: During a week of windsurfing I found the sensor at the airport to be fairly representative of the wind on the water at Orient Bay. 12-14mph was equal to planing with a 7.2 and 120 liter board, while 15 mph meant planing with a 6.7.
