open lake forecast for lake michigan
national weather service milwaukee/sullivan wi
843 am cst fri jan 9 2026

for waters beyond five nautical miles of shore on lake michigan.

waves are provided as a range of significant wave heights, which
is the average of the highest 1/3 of the wave, along with the
average height of the highest 10% of the waves which will
occasionally be encountered.

.synopsis...

strong low pressure around 29.3 inches will continue to lift
northeastward across eastern ontario into quebec. gusty southwest
winds with gales linger across the far southern third of the lake
this morning, but west to northwest gales are expected to develop
across the entire lake later later this morning into the midday
and afternoon hours. gale warnings are in effect.

winds will gradually weaken this afternoon as high pressure
around 30.2 inches works its way across lake michigan through

of low pressure as it lift into eastern ontario/quebec. gales may
develop in association with this feature. another area of high
pressure will build across the region for sunday before another
low traverses the region early next week.
