In many aspects this site is similar to the famous "Canadian Hole" at Cape Hatteras. On the bay side, the water is shallow and the bottom is sandy -- perfect for learning or fast flat-water shredding, depending on wind conditions. For the more demanding, ocean sailing is just across the street. The best all-around launch sites are located on the bayside of a strip of land that separates Rehoboth Bay from the Atlantic Ocean. There are two large parking lots about a mile south of the town of Dewey Beach. Both allow windsurfers; the northern one is paved and usually less crowded. On the bayside, flat water prevails with shallow water in most places. In fact, watch out for the shallow areas at low tide. It's very easy to lose a fin box! On the ocean side, beware of Hatteras-like shore break (and we emphasize break). If possible, seek the shelter of the jetties at the Indian River Inlet. The North Side of the Inlet is sailable all year round. However, the South Side is restricted to swimmers only during the high season. One last little bit of local knowledge: Holts Landing State Park, located off Delaware Route 26 on the Indian River, is an excellent place to sail on easterly or northeasterly winds. If the sensor at Dewey reads strong from the east, you can bet it will be even stronger at Holts.

 Season: April-October
 Ability Level: Beginner-advanced
 Launch: sandy beach

From the north: follow Route 1 Coastal Highway south through the town of Dewey Beach. Continue south for approximately one mile. State Park bayside beaches are on the right. From the south: follow Route1 Coastal Highway north approximately 3-4 miles past the Indian River Inlet Bridge. State Park bayside beaches are on the left.

The sensor is located at the Rehoboth Bay Sailing Association on Rehoboth Bay, approximately one-half mile south of Dewey Beach. This site gives perfect readings from 360 degrees.
