Crystal Cove SP Overview
The only time this place has enough wind is usually after winter storm clearing winds. There is vitually no urban runoff that impacts this area, so even after the rains, it is probably still clean enough to enjoy. Since this is a State Beach, it may not be technically legal to launch from here. However, during the winter when few people are around, we have asked the State Park personnel driving in their trucks on the beach if it was ok to launch, and they have said no problem every time. Clearing winds can be gusty by nature and the adjacent cliffs just add to this effect. The risk increases as a result of numerous rock outcroppings just offshore, rock reefs, and often sizeable shore break. If it wasn't for the clean water, it would rarely be worthwhile. Best place to launch is approximately 300 yards NW of the Beachcomber Restaurant. Stay upwind at all times to avoid drifting into the rock reef if the wind shuts down.
